Undercover by Eliot Grayson5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Undercover is the fourth book in the Vino and Veritas series, set in Sarina Bowen’s World of True North. A slight gripe that this similarity in style did mean that I sometimes had to take a few moments to know which character I was with when listening. ![]() I also really liked the narration - both Cooper North and Time Paige have an engaging but relaxed, low key style which is my kind of thing. Two intelligent men managed to work it out!!! Another massive plus was that the two MCs had really distinctive voices both of which I really liked. I had some anxiety about how the reveal would be handled - I dreaded some overblown fight with crap communication between the MCs - but again Grayson did the whole thing with grace and wit. In a kind of Buffy-ish way the "big drama" became a lovely way to riff on the usual relationship insecurities, misunderstandings and perils of intimacy. But then the book developed a more sly humour and did some nice subtle playing with the genre. Grayson initially used the setup to make some good jokes at this kind of silliness. Alec deliberately gets close to Gabe to do some undercover investigation and the two proceed to fall for each other. It had a "only in a romance" setup - FBI agent Alec thinks (obviously totally innocent) dropout student Gabe is possibly involved in a drug smuggling operation via his family's shipping business (not spoilers, this is all established in the first chapter or so). ![]()
